Henrik Ibsen (1828–1906), the father of modern drama, has been a cornerstone of the repertoires of world theatres for a century. Hedda Gabler is amongst his most controversial female characters – she is one of the first dramatic heroines who is neither logical nor mad. When she first appeared, she was deemed “unreal” and monstrous”, but today she can be called a modern woman – fatal, demonically attractive, insolent, and wilful. Even before taking off her wedding dress, she already feels the social corset constricting her and prescribing rules on the role of women in society. Her quest for freedom stems from a yearning for power. In an elegantly perverse way, she directs, creates, steals, and induces, making good use of her femme fatale nature. A destructive goddess, she does all this to cast out the deadly boredom. The epilogue of two shots is enacted by the loaded pistol of General Gabler, Hedda’s father.
