Voranc by Dane Zajc is a poetic exploration of Slovenian rural life, steeped in archetypes ̶ a reticent, hard-working mother, a stubborn, alcoholic father, and a rebellious son who wants to escape the shackles of his parents’ traditional lifestyle. At its core lies a conflict between father and son. The dilapidated farm and the hard, monotonous work do not appeal to young Jernej – he is tempted to venture out in the valley, into a world of new possibilities and adventures, so he leaves home and joins the partisans. His parents are left alone, surrounded by the voices of their ancestors and other deceased people, troubled by the weight of hardship and curses that echo within the walls of their home. Typical of Zajc’s work, the unnamed character in the play is indomitable and headstrong nature – a silent observer of human destinies.
