Stanko Majcen (1888-1970) was a poet, novelist, playwright and journalist who published most of his work before World War II. His plays too premiered during that period. In 1967, Majcen’s Selected Work in two volumes was published, featuring Emperor John, a comedy in three acts, in volume 2. Some of Majcen’s texts ̶ including the adaptations of his prose work ̶ were broadcast on the radio, mainly in Trieste. As for his plays, in the period after WW II, only one of them, a one-act Expressionist play Apocalypse was staged in Slovenian professional theatres (it world premiered at the Slovene Permanent Theatre in Trieste in 1975, and in 1987 it was produced at the Glej Experimental Theatre in Ljubljana). As far as the venue of today’s Slovene National Theatre Drama Ljubljana is concerned, two of Majcen’s plays were staged there: Kasija (1919), which was his stage debut, and in 1945, just before the end of the war, “Our-Lady-of-the-Snows story in three acts”, entitled Mothers.
